The gut is an important part of the body and is known to be quite complex. The gut has its place and role in the body. However, over the years, the place of the gut in keeping the body healthy is being discovered. According to several studies, there is a major link between the state of the gut and mood, the immune system, mental health, etc.

Due to the link between the gut and the general state of the body, it has become a lot easy to tell when the gut is in a healthy state.

If you are not sure how to tell how healthy your gut is, below are signs of an unhealthy gut.

High Sugar Craving

It might not seem like there is a strong correlation between your sugar craving s and the state of your gut. Nonetheless, people with unhealthy guts are very likely to have increased cravings for sugar.

When one feeds on processed foods and lots of sugars regularly, there is a decrease in the good bacteria present in the gut. This decrease causes a major imbalance which can further lead to an increased sugar craving. Although not bad on its own, this increased sugar craving can do your gut a lot of harm.

Stomach Upset

This is a major sign that all is not well with your gut. Such things as heartburn, diarrhea, constipation, bloating, etc. occur when the gut is unhealthy. When the gut is in a healthy state, you will not have to go through a lot of difficulties before you are able to process foods or take out waste.

Regular Fatigue and Sleep Disturbances

There are quite a number of reasons the average person might have to deal with sleep disturbances. One of them is an unhealthy gut. When an unhealthy gut makes it difficult to sleep, chronic fatigue sets in.

Why is this so?

The gut is responsible for producing serotonin. Although it does not produce all the serotonin in the body, the gut produces a major proportion of the serotonin in the body. Serotonin affects sleep as well as mood. Going by this, if there is an issue with the gut, the production of serotonin will be affected, and this can lead to major issues with sleep

Autoimmune Conditions

Although the impact of the gut on the body’s immune system is not very pronounced, new pieces of evidence of the way the gut affects the immune system are gradually being discovered.

According to lots of discoveries, the immune system and systemic inflammation can be affected by the state of the gut. When this occurs, autoimmune diseases can set in.

Unwanted Weight Changes

Certain times, a weight change simply occurs when you go through a change in your eating habit. Nonetheless, weight changes are not dependent on just your eating habits. It is possible to have a major change in weight without increasing or decreasing the quantity of food you eat. If you experience this, your gut might just be in an unhealthy state.

Food intolerances occur when the body struggles to digest some foods. Although sometimes mistaken for food allergies, food intolerances are not the same as food allergies.

Although there could be many reasons for food intolerances occurring, the bad state of gut bacteria is believed to be responsible for food intolerances. When this occurs, symptoms such as nausea, abdominal pain, diarrhea, gas, and bloating can set in.

It is good to know how to detect how healthy your gut is. That, however, is no good enough. You should also know how to make your gut healthy. Below are tips to keep your gut healthy.

Sleep Well

It seems you might not be able to achieve all that you have in mind to achieve if you do not spend so much time awake. Regardless of the fact that you have dreams and a lot to achieve, the place of the right quantity of sleep cannot be over-emphasized.

If you fail to get the right quantity of sleep over a period, your gut might get affected. While this is bad in itself, it can lead to more complex issues. To keep your gut in the right shape, you should get between 6-8 hours of sleep every day.

Go Through Less Stress

We live in an environment where most actions are associated with a lot of stress. Regardless of this, you should learn to watch your stress levels. When the body goes through a lot of stress, the gut suffers. So, to keep your gut in the right shape, you must come up with ways to lower the level the stress you go through. Some ways to deal with your stress level are getting a massage, walking, and meditating.

Take Your Time to Eat

The gut gets unhealthy when it does not have the right supply of nutrients. This sometimes occurs when the body fails to absorb nutrients or when the food is not rich in nutrients. To ensure your body gets all the nutrients it needs, take time to chew your food. When you eat slowly, the gut is better able to absorb nutrients.
