How healthy lifestyle habits may increase your lifespan by a decade

Americans have a shorter life expectancy than most other developed economies, and according to experts, this has more to do with lifestyle than anything else. While eating healthy food does play a vital role in our health, other aspects of daily life such as bad habits can damage our health significantly. The good news is, our bodies are designed to self-heal and generate new cells – provided you keep a steady supply of essential nutrients and try to make healthy choices whenever possible as a way to keep the immune system working, the muscles strong, etc.

A study published by Harvard University’s School of Public Health found a direct link between cardiovascular health and what might be referred to as “healthy behavior”. Simple things like drinking water or adding a fruit to meals appeared to make a huge difference in the long-term health of the participants. The term ‘healthy lifestyle’ is meant to describe a limitation of what’s commonly known as unhealthy, including eating fatty foods, avoiding physical activity, drinking, smoking, etc.

The following 7 lifestyle habits were found to increase quality of life and lengthen life expectancy by more than a decade.

         1) Eating a Healthy Diet

It takes tremendous effort to cook healthy home meals and eat with the family every single day when you have work, schedules, and social commitments – and it’s difficult for single people as well. However, research has consistently shown that people who eat at home tend to be healthier and make better lifestyle choices than those who eat prepackaged food.

A good diet that has plenty of fruit, natural fats, protein, and green vegetables provides the energy requirements for the day and keeps your metabolism working perfectly, meaning you won’t gain unhealthy weight.

         2) Getting Regular Exercise

If you don’t think its important to work out every day, check out this article on some of the top business people in America and how they make exercise a daily ritual to maximize physical and mental performance. The national Cancer Institute reports that daily exercise can increase life expectancy by 5 years, and it doesn’t really matter the type of exercise you perform. The goal here is to avoid inactivity because of the changes it causes in the body.

Physical activity keeps your energy levels high, strengthens bones and muscles, and it also reduces the risk of depression and other diseases, including cancer.Start slowly with daily runs or get a bicycle and circle your block a couple of times – there’s no science to physical exertion, just start doing something. 

         3) Keep a Healthy Weight

Weight management can minimize your risk of common diseases like diabetes, heart disease, and breast cancer. Keep in mind that ‘healthy weight’ varies from one person to another, based on height; however, the Body Mass Index (BMI) is a good standard to measure against.

         4) Limit Your Alcohol Intake

Alcohol does contain calories – especially if you’re drinking beer – so it’s worth limiting your intake if you don’t want that waistline to expand. But this isn’t the only reason we discourage drinking; it’s also about reducing the risk of certain diseases, including cancer, which can sometimes be exacerbated by alcohol. Overdrinking has been linked to increases in colon cancer, breast cancer, liver problems, and many conditions that severely affect quality of life and limit life expectancy.         5) Sleep Is Not a Luxury

Sleep is absolutely essential to performance, and failing to sleep also means that your body could start falling apart. This is because the body recharges during sleep, and the immune system is made stronger to fight infection; however, when we fail to sleep, we basically sleep up the aging process. An adult needs at least 7 hours of quality sleep every night (but not more than 9 hours), and for your body to gain all the benefits, you must keep a consistent sleeping pattern. Mental health issues such as anxiety, depression have been linked to a lack of sleep; and in fact, the National Sleep Foundation encourages everyone to do a personal assessment of their sleeping patterns as a way to boost health.

         6) Boost Your Water Intake

We don’t even need to go into the details of why your body needs water, but think of it as a nutrient that’s needed for optimal function – and by this we mean things like nutrient absorption, detoxification, and cell function. So basically, water keeps you alive. In the morning when you wake up, your body is dehydrated and requires a refill before you go about getting breakfast. Drink a glass of water first thing when you wake up, and this will boost your metabolism and increase energy levels throughout the day.

         7) Take Vitamin and Mineral Supplements Daily      

If you’re not already taking vitamin and omega-3 supplements, we recommend you start now. It’s likely you’re not getting all the nutrients you need from your diet, so to avoid a deficiency that could slow down performance or raise the risk of infection, start supplementing. Remember, sticking with healthy choices is what eventually leads to a healthy lifestyle, and based on current research, your health will improve if you make these positive changes.
