How to Do a Cranberry Detox

Detoxing your body is the process of getting rid of the accumulated toxins in the intestines, kidneys, lymphatic system, and other organs of the body. Toxic substances make their way into your bodies as we ingest foods and use products loaded with coloring, additives, pesticides, and preservatives.

But with all the detox options available, what can be called the most effective way to get rid of all bodily toxins?

According to alternative medicine practitioners and naturopaths, a cranberry juice detox once in a while can cleanse the body of dangerous elements so we can achieve our best health and wellness. Cranberries can also help those who want to lower their blood sugar and lose weight due to the fact that its has lower sugar content compared to other common berries. (1)

Fresh cranberries only have a caloric content of 40 per cup and contain two grams of sugar, and already packed with antioxidants and fiber. While there are dried cranberries, it’s best to enjoy them fresh to get all the goodness of this super berry.

Cranberry Detox Guide

Step 1

Before doing anything related to detox, check your calendar for any strenuous activities both physical and mental. If you have an incoming activity that requires a lot of effort, make sure to reschedule them. Your body will not be able to exert a lot of energy during the fasting period.

Step 2

Get a container that can carry at least 64 ounces of liquid. Once it’s clean, put 8 to 12 ounces of unsweetened and undiluted cranberry juice. To fill the rest of the container, add filtered water.

Step 3

Your first day should begin with you cranberry juice replacing your meals. Your juice consumption should match your eating habits. Throughout the day, make sure to drink at least half the container. Drink no more than a half container to prevent getting your kidneys from being stressed.

Step 4

The next 2 to 3 days will still involve fasting. Refill your container with the same amount of cranberry and juice each day and drink the mixture each mealtime. On your third day, you can start eating whole grains and organic fruits for breakfast. Before eating your first meal, drink at least 4 ounces of your detox juice and wait for at least an hour before eating breakfast.

Step 5

On the fourth day of your detox, re-introduce whole foods into your body. Focus on eating brown rice, whole grain foods, and organic vegetables. You can also eat nuts, fruits, and beans, in fact, anything as long it doesn’t contain additional sweeteners and preservatives. However, you will still have to avoid eating meat and dairy products.

Step 6

Keep drinking your detox juice until a week has passed. Always pair your cranberry juice and water mixture with while foods and fruits. If you can, continue with this diet for 2 to 3 weeks.

Helpful Tip:

The fasting period can cause the body to weaken because of the lack of food but you can keep your immune system healthy by including periodic servings of astragalus tincture. (2) You can also take dandelion leaf capsules to strengthen the detoxification process.

Reasons to Love Cranberries

Cranberries are rich in antioxidants

Most people would avoid eating and using cranberries because this fruit is both known for its bitterness and sourness. However, there’s a lot of polyphenols in cranberries that you don’t want to miss. These are antioxidant that the body needs in order to fight off free radicals that cause many types of diseases. (3)

You only need to incorporate cranberries to your diet and this can already support thee overall detoxification of your body. it will also help fight off unexplained cravings for unhealthy foods because your body is getting everything that it needs to the very core. Other polyphenol-rich foods include other berries, beans, and chocolate. (10)

Cranberries help prevent constipation

If you are always constipated, fiber-rich cranberries can help in the regularity of bowel movements. This fruit is also rich in potassium and vitamin C, which are also important to keep the heart pumping and to strengthen the immune system. A benefit of these vitamins and nutrients in cranberries is that they promote good digestive flow and prevent waste from going stagnant in the body. (9) Fiber also stimulates the formation of good bacteria known as probiotics that help fight fungi and yeast. (4)

All berries can prevent constipation, but to those who don’t really favor sweet fruits and are sensitive to fructose, cranberries make a perfect choice because of its low sugar content.

Cranberries clean up the kidneys

As a fruit capable of detoxing the body, it’s not really surprising why cranberries have the capability to clean up the kidneys. This is the reason why it’s also used for treating common bladder and urinary infections. It stimulates urine flow and helps in the removal of bad bacteria, which causes infection. (5)

Cranberries protect the body from bad bacteria

One feature that makes the cranberry unique from other berries is that it has the ability to protect the body from the harmful Helicobacter pylori bacteria. (6) This bacteria can cause chronic yeast infections, allergies, and digestive problems.

If you eat cranberries, you’re essentially cleaning your gut and kill bad bacteria, making your immunity stronger. You can also consume cranberries if you have a yeast overgrowth or candida. (7) The components found in cranberries will fight off bacteria that causes candida and not feed yeast in the body, which fruits high in sugar are capable of doing. Some people also eat cranberries to help fight tooth decay. (8)

Cranberry Juice Detox Ideas

Detoxing with cranberry juice is easy because it can be mixed along with other ingredients but it won’t affect the detoxification abilities of the berries. If you cannot commit to a week-long detox diet yet, try one of these recipes and substitute any meal of the day with a healthy glass to rid your body off of toxins.

Berry Cocktail: Mix a fourth of a cup each of blueberries and cranberries with a half cup of pears. Blend the fruits together in 8 ounces of water. Add lots of ice or chill before drinking. You can also prepare this drink by chopping the fruits and leaving them on the water overnight. In the morning, strain it and drink the juice for a morning detox.

Fruits and Veggies: Put a half cup each of oranges, cranberries, and coconut milk in your blender. Add a stalk of celery or a half cup of baby kale and a quarter of a cup of mango. Blend the ingredients all together and pour the mixture in a tall glass. You can top the drink with ice or chill the contents of the blender first before drinking it. This detox juice has all the right vitamins and minerals your body needs in order to be cleansed.

All Berry: Blend cranberries, blackberries, and raspberries together in equal amounts. If you use half a cup each, it produce a glassful of detox juice. This all berry detox juice is loaded with fiber, antioxidants, and vitamins.

Spicy Cranberry: This is one of the most unique juices you will ever taste. Combine a cup of cranberries, 1/2 apple, 1/2 bulb fennel, and about 1 inch of turmeric. Mix them all together in a blender, top it with ice, and serve!
